Things were different between us after that, they had to be. We needed no spoken word, no sign of any kind, really; the difference was there in the silence that harbored our two spirits and altered all ordinary exchange between us.

I tried not to think about it. I went to class, went to work, did my lessons, cleaned house and cooked meals, and spent more and more of my evenings with Emory. And Emory was skillfully and methodically doing what he had said he would do: try harder, woo me back again. Some days there were flowers waiting at my apartment, or at the bookstore, with a message on the card that would make my cheeks go scarlet. Some mornings when he arrived to take me to class he would have a bag of fresh, warm Spudnuts and a carton of milk. He would find me afternoons where I was studying in the library and sit and rub my shoulders, or quiz me on my Italian verbs. When it was not my night to cook for the apartment and no one else had, he would bring take-out food to me, and then run errands for me—at times even for my roommates.

One afternoon he surprised us and took Penelope’s old jalopy to the car wash and filled the tank with gasoline—which kindness alone endeared him to my roommates for longer than time and memory will last. I held my breath, waiting for his good intentions to wear thin and his model behavior to become tedious. But he maintained his incredible devotion so thoroughly that I felt myself relaxing, beginning to trust him, beginning to believe his endearments, beginning to soften my resistance when he held me, when he kissed me. Sweet and delicious was the web of his affection, and it was with a sort of relief that I felt myself cease to struggle and give in at last.
